The Dean

Dr. James Abugri holds BSc, Mphil and PhD (Biochemistry) degrees from the University of Ghana. He is currently a Senior  Lecturer in Biochemistry and the Dean of the School of Chemical and Biochemical Sciences. He is also the Team leader of the COVID-19 Technical Management Team of the University.

He has authored and co-authored several articles in reputable journals including the Journal of Infectious Diseases, BMC Genomics, Communication Biology, and AAS Open Research, among others.

He has been instrumental in supporting the development of academic curricula in the Chemical, Biochemical, and Biomedical Sciences at the University. His research interest spans malaria immunology, HIV, and general applications of biochemical and chemical techniques in microbiology and molecular biotechnology.

He also has a strong interest in genomics and bioinformatics applications for in silico drug discovery for innovative translational drug design.

He has reviewed journal articles for BMC Genomics, Scientific African, and other reputable journals. He is a member of the Ghana Science Association and the Immunology Society of Ghana. He has been a recipient of the prestigious European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) travel grant and the Carnegie Scholarship for the Next Generation of African Academics.

He was privileged to be supported by grants from the Royal Society of the UK, Leverhulme scheme, Wellcome Trust and the World Bank (awarded to Professor Gordon Akanzuwine Awandare) for his PhD studentship at the University of Ghana.

He currently collaborates with researchers at the West African Centre for Cell Biology of Infectious Pathogens (WACCBIP) , College of Basic and Applied Sciences, University of Ghana
